Tonight I was moved to tears by the tv news pictures of the people in the Philippines in their unbelievable suffering. I paused to share my pain with God knowing that God knows this pain intimately – that God is present in all that is going on now. I became immediately aware of the immensity of the pain that God must know in all of the dreadful effects of this record breaking storm. My immediate response was a very strong urge to make a contribution to the Red Cross because they had been mentioned in the news story as on the job there. Minutes later, thanks to the Red Cross website, my gift was on the way. If I had not woven the thread of prayer into my evening in front of the tv, I would have just wiped my tears, and watched the next commercial. But when I prayed for the people I had just seen, I became involved. And the answer about what I could do came through crystal clear. My prayer changed me from an outside observer to a participant in God’s weaving of the on-going creation.
