I had a wonderful experience in March just before Lent began with three bookstore “Meet, Greet, And Sign” events with my book “Weaving Prayer Into the Tapestry of Life.” Strangers were amazingly willing to engage in conversations about prayer and eager to buy! I used the approaching Lenten season as a nudge to “buy now”. One woman alerted me that she was not waiting for Ash Wednesday to start using the book. This picture is from Malaprops Bookstore , an independent bookstore in downtown Asheville. They notified me later that we had sold an unusually high number of books for a signing event, and that the book was on the store’s best sellers list for the week and prominently displayed in their front window. I am delightedly amazed. The buyers were fascinating people – an incredible range of life styles and experiences. I am so happy to be selling this time beyond church catalogues and church bookstores because these non-Methodist people were so pleased to find the book and eager to read it. If you know downtown Asheville, you will understand my delight at this reception. Several people bought the book for their mothers. Some bought it for a young person or young people. So I am now exploring reaching out to Charlotte bookstores to promote the book as a gift for Mother’s Day and Graduation. My friend Mary Frances Allen helped me at Malaprops, and my niece from Charlotte, Martha Brown, helped me at the two Barnes and Noble stores. Both were charming, gracious, and persuasive promoters of the book. This is a whole new world I had not anticipated, and loads more fun than that editing and checking references etc. – a pay-off for all of that work.
